Why we say that

Material quantities depend on things a calculator cannot see: ground conditions, compaction, surface porosity, cutting waste, batch tolerances and how the job is actually built. Two identical patios on different ground can need noticeably different amounts of sub-base.

Anything structural — retaining walls, foundations, load-bearing work, electrics, gas or drainage — should be designed or checked by a suitably qualified professional.
